Buy Bitcoin
Buying Bitcoin is easy. What matters is doing it cleanly, so you can also sell it later without problems.
Where to buy
You have two main routes: specialized Bitcoin-only exchanges or large centralized platforms. Both work, they just feel different.
- Bitcoin-only exchanges: focused on Bitcoin, usually simpler and cleaner. Examples in the DACH region: Relai, 21bitcoin, Coinfinity.
- Large centralized exchanges: Bitpanda, Binance, Coinbase or Kraken. Availability and rules differ by country.
KYC or non-KYC
Non-KYC, buying without ID verification, sounds appealing for privacy.
The catch shows up when you sell, because you often have to prove where your Bitcoin comes from.
- Prove control and origin: you should be able to show at any time that you controlled the Bitcoin and where they came from.
- Source of funds: it should also be traceable that you had the money to make the purchase.
- No privacy mixers: do not throw your Bitcoin into a mixer. It blurs the origin and can lead to blocked coins later.
- Document the timeline: purchase date, amount, exchange and wallet, transparently.
Where to store it
Once you own Bitcoin, the storage decision matters more than the purchase itself. Not your keys, not your coins.
- On the exchange: convenient, but not your keys, so not really your coins.
- Hot wallet: connected to the internet, good for small amounts and spending.
- Cold wallet: offline and clearly safer for larger amounts.
- Ideal: a hardware wallet with your own seed phrase. More on the Self-custody page.
Buy cleanly, then self-custody
Buy at a reputable exchange, document everything cleanly, and then move it into self-custody.
That's the whole game.

Frequently asked questions
How do I buy Bitcoin as a beginner?
Choose a regulated exchange, verify your identity, deposit with a bank transfer, buy Bitcoin as a one off or as a recurring plan, and withdraw to a wallet you control once the amount matters to you.
What is the minimum amount to buy Bitcoin?
Most exchanges let you start with around 10 units of your currency. You never need a whole Bitcoin because it is divisible into 100 million satoshis.
Should I leave Bitcoin on the exchange?
For small amounts it is convenient, but an exchange holds the keys, not you. Once the balance is meaningful, move it to your own wallet.
